A new Fine Art Gallery opened its doors on the 8th of September 2022 in Chemin Vingt Pieds… Its curator is none but the internationally known artist Shay Hewett. The Sixth Sense gallery aims at bringing a much-desired injection of high calibre art to Mauritius, whilst creating a dynamic platform for local artists to propel themselves to a global audience.
Before settling in Mauritius, Shay Hewett lived and worked in London and New York, immersing herself in the art world… The Fine Art Gallery offers a ‘next level’ art experience in Mauritius, promoting established artists from around the globe and locally. The public is invited to view the inaugural group show, where visitors will experience Mauritian art, exhibited amongst other artworks from Cape Town, USA and London.
Thus, a diverse collection of artworks are on show to the public for the first time, curated by Shay Hewett herself. It showcases international and local artists, in a unique contemporary environment, ideally located amongst other design-orientated establishments.
“Creativity is at the core of Mauritian culture. I am inspired by the highly diverse ethnicities, languages, faiths and of course the breath-taking island scenery. I look forward to working with Mauritian artists bringing their strong identity to an international audience. Respecting originality and authenticity, our team aims to support Mauritius’s artistic talent and maximise their global exposure. I am proud to represent and be part of a thriving art community”, says the gallery’s founder-director Shay Hewett.
The inaugural show consists of 27 artworks from nine artists displaying different themes, processes, and techniques. Imaginations will be captured by tactile expression, spontaneous colour, playful texture, striking forms and provocative subject matter.
American-born abstract artist Cat Spilman, Jean-Luc Almond, Gael Froget and Celine Le Vieux are among those exhibiting their artworks.
