To celebrate the end of the year festivities in Mauritius or Rodrigues Island will be even more pleasant for our Reunionese friends!
Following the announcement made by the Mauritian authorities to grant passport-free travel to Mauritius, Air Austral has announced the resumption of its Pierrefonds-Mauritius flights as from 2 November 2022. In addition, the regional airline will also resume its direct flights between Reunion and Rodrigues.
Passport-free stay
Until 30 June 2023, Réunionese citizens travelling to Mauritius with only their suitcases and their valid identity card will be warmly welcomed in Mauritius. This applies only to French citizens living in Réunion and travelling from Réunion for holiday purposes.
The terms of admission ? A minimum stay of two nights, return air tickets and confirmed accommodation arrangements… And a delightful holiday!
On arrival, they will have to present their valid French identity card.
Travel more efficiently… and more often!
If Reunionese travellers can now travel without bothering too much about administrative procedures, they can also fly more often! The travel conditions for these travellers match the resumption of the Pierrefonds-Mauritius flights, which will be operating twice a week, every Wednesday and Saturday. The first direct flight between the two islands was initiated in May 2015 but had been suspended.
Great news
This resumption is excellent news for the residents of southern Réunion, as the almost permanent closure of Saint-Pierre Pierrefonds airport has until recently led them to travel to Saint-Denis and to experience traffic problems, including traffic jams.
This is also positive news for Mauritian tourism as Reunionese customers represent 10% of tourist arrivals. This off-season clientele, who fly in on weekends, visit not only Airbnb residences but also family-run hotels and three to four star hotels.
Air Austral is providing four daily flights between Reunion and Mauritius, including two flights per week between Pierrefonds and Mauritius and one weekly flight between Reunion and Rodrigues.
