Culinary delights at LUX* Grand Baie

The voluminous space of the lobby at LUX* Grand Baie beckons… indoor flows seamlessly into outdoor, calming neutrals blend effortlessly with natural textures, black stone and wooden pillars soar elegantly, and the vivid turquoise of the ocean glistens, jewel-like. But there’s no lingering here, for culinary delights await us.

The spirited, bohemian-chic vibe at beach club-cum restaurant Beach Rouge, has everything to do with its location on the water’s edge, where sophisticated playfully meets contemporary. Here, the à la carte breakfast menu is as inventive as it is familiar, and our Japanese Omelettes with Marinated Tuna sing with subtle gingery soy sauce, while nuggets of bonito-flake popcorn add bursts of fun and flavour. Coconut-adorned Tropical French Toast enjoyed with chocolate-kissed cappuccinos is breakfast-ending perfection.

Next stop: the most sought-after rooftop in Mauritius at Bisou. With uninterrupted views of the lagoon we soak up the serenity of this space. And. There’s a swing… so utterly in place. At the restaurant, a tapas-style cuisine celebrating colourful Indian and Levantine influences, is offered. We settle on the Bisou Burgers. Soya patties brought alive by spicy raw banana, and tamarind chutney, these are not your average vegan burgers. And there’s absolutely nothing average about dining from a floating tray in the infinity pool, seemingly drifting over the lagoon below.

We make our way to Ai KISU, the hotel’s signature Asian restaurant. Creativity delivers culinary twists at every turn on the menu, and our starters of Truffle Edamame Dumplings, feather-light puffs of truffly bliss served with water chestnut and crème fraiche, are truly ingenious. And so, to the pièce de resistance. Ai KISU means ‘flame’ in Japanese, and there is no finer homage to this unique culinary experience than to taste from its very essence – the Ai KISU Fire Box Warayaki Grill. Suffice to say that our Rice straw-flamed Octopus, with yuzu kosho mayonnaise, and Korean spicy glaze is gastronomy that has to be experienced. The Japanese Yuzu Cheesecake with fresh citrus aromas and flavours is a sublime finalé. And that’s dinner. As done only at Ai KISU.

Is it really time to leave? Not just yet. Diverting from our culinary path, we arrive at LUX* Me Spa, where multi-sensory magic is on the menu. During these quiet after-hours, we have all 1,625 m² to ourselves. We set comfortably in the Spa Garden, glasses of champagne in hand. There is nothing quite like the luxury of exclusivity.
